Hornton Stone

Also known as Marlstone or Ironstone Hornton Stone is an iron rich limestone up to ten metres thick. It weathers to a distinctive orangey dark brown but can appear bluey/green when new.

The darker stone and thatched properties are prevalent in the North Oxfordshire villages and even in the short distance between Great Tew and Chipping Norton there is quite a marked difference in the building materials used. The medium is thought to have been a favourite of the sculptor Henry Moore and was the focus of last year’s exhibition at the late sculptor’s studios in Hertfordshire called The Living Hand
